How is Makar Sakranti celebrated in different states of India?

Makar Sakranti is celebrated all over the country in different ways. As we move from one state to another, we find people celebrating the festival in their own ways. Indian people welcome the new season of harvest during this time.

Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh

Makar Sakranti is celebrated with chikki, til paati, gajak, kheer and til ladoo in Rajasathan. Women of this region observe a ritual in which they give household items to 13 married women. Newly married daughters are invited to their maternal house along with their husbands and offered treat to them with a big feast. “Sakrant Bhoj” is organized at homes and friends and family members are invited for it. Brahmins are also invited for the food. Kite flying is observed at some parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Youngsters engage themselves in kite flying competitions.


Assamees call it Bhogali Bihu and their feasts last for a week. Young people make huts from bamboo, leaves, and thatch.They also play traditional games such as buffalo fighting and pot breaking.


Gujaratis fly kites on 14th and 15th January every year. Boys and girls spend whole day on their terraces flying kites. They eat undhiyu and jalebi with their loved ones. The festival is called “Uttarayan” in this state.
